There is a new travel trend that is taking over social media! Called Destination Gatekeeping, the trend is changing the way travellers share their travel experiences online with their followers. But what is it, and why is it getting so popular? Read on to find out.

Destination Gatekeeping To Protect Hidden Gems

When we travel, our first instinct is to share photos on social media and geotag our location to show everyone the beautiful place we are relaxing at. But not with this trend. Destination Gatekeeping is all about keeping hidden gems hidden and deliberately choosing not to share the exact location of beautiful cafes, beaches, or tourist spots with everyone. But why are travellers choosing it?

The answer is simple: to prevent overcrowding. According to The Times of India, many ethical travellers are choosing not to reveal the exact location of hidden gems to stop them from becoming the next viral hotspot on social media. The aim is not to hide a place but to protect and preserve it. They don’t want people visiting a destination only for one social media picture or to make reels while leaving the place damaged. Some people are even calling this trend ‘digital silence’.

Why Travellers Are Following This Trend?

Many travellers believe that some people visit destinations only to click the perfect picture for social media. They don’t really travel to experience the place but simply to add it to their Instagram highlights. This is one of the biggest reasons why people are avoiding sharing exact locations. Destination Gatekeeping is seen as a way to reduce overtourism and protect lesser-known places.

The trend also allows travellers to enjoy a destination peacefully. With fewer crowds, they can spend more time exploring the place and its local culture instead of standing in long queues for a single photo. Many people now see Destination Gatekeeping as a more mindful way to travel. However, some travellers are still happy to share these locations with close friends and family who have a similar mindset.
