This Is The Biggest Problem Upasana Faces While Travelling Abroad With Ram Charan

For Upasana Konidela, Vice Chairperson of Apollo Hospitals CSR Group and co-founder of UR Life and Athamma’s Kitchen, life revolves around food, family and business. The doting wife of actor Ram Charan graciously hosted our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, at the Konidela family’s palatial home in Hyderabad. What followed was an 8-course meal of fondly prepared family delicacies and an equally delicious conversation packed with interesting ‘bytes’ ( that includes a big problem Upasana faces when travelling abroad with Ram).

Ram Charan Craves Indian Food During His Global Trips

As Upasana Konidela and Kamiya Jani conversed about the latter’s daily routine, her family’s food habits and the birth of Athamma’s Kitchen( a ready-to-eat food brand), the conversation steered towards Ram Charan’s fondness for home-cooked South Indian food. Upasana said, “Athamma’s Kitchen was started as a convenience.” She elaborated, “We used to go to the best restaurants in the world. And then he (Ram Charan) would come back and say, ‘I need Indian food.'”

To this, Upasana would respond, “It’s 11:30 at night. Where are we going to find Indian food?” But Ram would insist, and the couple would end up roaming around at night looking for a place that serves Indian food. They would often end up scouting for an Indian restaurant during their international trips. “Because one meal of his has to be Indian,” says Upasana. While Ram can adjust to indulging in a different cuisine for lunch, he prefers his South Indian breakfasts and dinners.

The Couple Would Scout For Indian Restaurants At Night Abroad

But even within the broad spectrum of Indian cuisine, Ram Charan always craves South Indian food. That’s comfort food for the actor. With a demand to have at least one South Indian meal a day, even during his trips abroad, the dietary habit often posed logistical concerns for Upasana. “And it has to be home-cooked for him to have that satisfaction,” explains the entrepreneur. Whenever Ram Charan is on a shoot, he ensures his diet comprises South Indian food.

Perhaps, this love for home-cooked Andhra meals stems from his parents, actor Chiranjeevi and mother, Surekha Konidela. Whenever actor Chiranjeevi had film commitments abroad, Surekha would make premade mixes and send them on the set. The team would add water to those mixes, and dishes like home-cooked Upma, Pongal, and Rasam would be ready in minutes. That’s the birth of Athamma’s Kitchen from Surekha Konidela’s love for her husband and family, and Upasana Konidela taking it forward with her entrepreneurial vision.
