The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Delhi-NCR, and some northern and central Indian states are also on high alert. According to the latest IMD update, the national capital may see temperatures up to 42°C by April 6 or 7, with chances of the heatwave lasting for the next six days. This extreme weather is representative of a larger seasonal pattern of higher-than-normal temperatures across many regions of India, stretching well into June.
Delhi-NCR Heatwave Warning Puts Northern India On High Alert
As reported by India Today via Daily Hunt, the prevailing weather trend indicates a sharp rise in day temperatures in Delhi, South Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, which are likely to increase by 2°C to 4°C over the seasonal average. Delhi touched a temperature of 35.7°C on Saturday, about 1.7 degrees above normal. The morning humidity was 47%, and the air quality index (AQI) was noted as moderate at 161.
Over the next few days, the IMD predicts clear weather, intense heat, and continuous heatwave conditions. With these high temperatures comes the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and worsening air quality.

Other States Will Face High Temperatures And Severe Weather
Not only Delhi-NCR but many other states are experiencing the same kind of severe weather:
- Maharashtra: Vidarbha and Marathwada regions have already experienced high temperatures close to 40°C.
- Rajasthan and Gujarat: Both these states can anticipate a higher number of heatwave days, with dry winds and clear skies playing a crucial role in the rising mercury levels.
- Bihar and Jharkhand: The temperature remained high, and people are advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak hours.
- West Bengal and Odisha: In addition to the high temperatures, these states are also experiencing high humidity, so conditions are becoming even more unbearable.
- Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: Forecast indicates that these places are expected to have the same temperature spikes, especially interior regions.
Stay Informed, Stay Safe
As per the reports, over 70% of India could face intense heatwave threats during the 21st century. Experts say that unseasonal high temperatures, like those reported this year as early as February, are signs of intensifying climate change impacts.
With the heatwave warning being issued in Delhi-NCR and other northern states, it’s essential to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and check local forecasts regularly. The extreme heat is a call to remind us of the changing climate and the necessity for us to quickly adapt and respond.
