The culture of renaming cities in India dates back to 1947, after the end of Colonial rule in India. Numerous proposals were made to rename several cities as per local languages or due to other factors. Since then India has seen a lot of renamed cities. But the proposed change is only implemented only when approved by the central government in New Delhi. Recently a similar proposal has been sent by the West Bengal government. In a proposal letter to the Central government, the state has requested a change in name of West Bengal. On Tuesday, the House of Parliament informed that the letter proposes renaming the state ‘Bangla’. Read on to know more details about the proposal of the government of West Bengal.
MHA Gave A “No Objection Certificate (NOC)” To The Proposals Received During The Last 5 Years
The Ministry of Home Affairs On Tuesday revealed about the developments regarding the proposal received from the West Bengal government. “A proposal has been received from the Government of West Bengal for renaming the state as Bangla in all three languages – Bengali, English, and Hindi,” said Union MoS for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.
Apart from that, Rai, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, also informed that MHA has given a “No Objection Certificate (NOC)” to the proposals for changing the name of cities across the country. The NOC is given to the proposals received during the last five years.
Following up on this, the All India Trinamool Congress (aitc) MP Saida Ahmad inquired about the details and the number of proposals received by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The MP also inquired if the government has revamped the guidelines for changing the names of heritage places. Replying to the queries, Nityanand Rai revealed that the MHA has no such guidelines for the change of names of heritage places.
West Bengal Not The First One To Send Proposal To The Government?
West Bengal is not the first to send a proposal to the Govt for renaming the State. Nityanand Rai informed that Andhra Pradesh’s Rajahmundry was renamed Rajamahendravaram in 2017. Following this, Jharkhand’s Nagar Untari was renamed Shri Banshidhar Nagar in 2018. The same year, Madhya Pradesh’s Nagar Panchayat Town Birshingpur Pali became Maa Birasini Dham. Along with that, Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad too was renamed Prayagraj the same year. In 2021, Madhya Pradesh’s Hoshangabad Nagar was renamed Narmadapuram, and Babai city’s name was changed to Makhan Nagar. In 2022, Punjab’s Shri Hargobindpur was renamed Shri Hargobindpur Sahib. Revealing more recent developments, Rai further said that on April 25, 2022, a proposal to rename Nasrullaganj Nagar as Bhairoonda has been received by the MHA, from the government of Madhya Pradesh.
