What? ‘Aligarh’ Might Be Renamed ‘Harigarh’ As Zila Panchayat Passes Resolution

In the last few years, many places in Uttar Pradesh have been renamed. Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj. Faizabad was given the new name Ayodhya. Mughal Sarai got renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayay Nagar. And recently, block panchayat leaders Kohri Singh and Umesh Yadav sent a proposal to the Yogi Adityanath government to rename Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh to Harigarh. A Twitter post by ANI UP reads, “At the Aligarh Zila Panchayat meeting, we discussed several infrastructure proposals…One of the proposals was renaming of Aligarh to Harigarh. All proposals to be sent to the CM: Shyauraj Singh, husband of Aligarh District Panchayat President Vijay Singh.”

Aligarh’s Dhanipur Airstrip To Be Renamed As Kalyan Singh Airstrip

According to ANI, Aligarh District Panchayat President Vijay Singh said, “We had a meeting of Zila Panchayat Board y’day. Some proposals were passed in the meeting, the first proposal was about renaming Aligarh to Harigarh. It was passed unanimously. We’ve sent it to the CM, I hope it’ll be approved.” Reportedly, along with the proposal of renaming Aligarh, the panchayat has cleared another proposal of renaming the Dhanipur airstrip in Aligarh to Kalyan Singh airstrip.

Did You Know That The Old Name Of Allahabad Was Illahabas? 

In October 2018, Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj. The city was named Illahabas, meaning the abode of God, by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. Subsequently, Akbar’s grandson Shah Jahan named it Allahabad. Reportedly, before Akbar rechristened the city, it was known as Prayag, the earliest mentions of which have been found in the Rigveda.
