“What Happens When Temple Rules Are Violated,” Dehradun Temple Throws Away Visitors’ Slippers; Video Goes Viral

Temple complexes are some of the most sacred spaces for Indians. They are kept immaculate and wearing slippers in many areas of the temple is prohibited. However, despite this being common knowledge, there are people who blatantly flout it and wear footwear in temples. Something similar happened in Dehradun’s Bhadraj Temple. When visitors continued to flout this basic rule, the temple found a way to teach these people a lesson. Here’s what they did.

The Bhadraj Temple is perched atop a hill 12 kilometres away from the town of Mussoorie. This means that in addition to offering sanctity, it also offers picturesque views. Many people therefore flock to the temple for spiritual peace as well as views.

The temple disallows visitors from wearing slippers inside the temple. Despite repeated warnings, however, there are some who continue to flout the rule. The temple therefore came up with a creative solution to deal with the problem.

A video showed a person, presumably a staff of the temple, throwing slippers of these miscreants off the hillside. The video was accompanied by the caption asking visitors to refrain from sullying the sanctity of the temple by wearing slippers inside its complex.

Many people lauded the temple’s actions and said that it was an appropriate way to teach such people a lesson. However, there were many people who objected to how the situation was handled.

Many people thought it inappropriate to through the footwear off the hillside as it only serves to pollute the picturesque environment. The slippers have plastic which takes forever to decompose. This will have adverse effects on the environment.

Yet others wondered what these people would do given that the temple was on top of a hill and there was presumably no footwear vendor.
