The Pentagon Pizza Index has become the latest talking point as the tension rises in the Middle East. This index is said to track pizza orders around the Pentagon. It is believed that this could indicate a possible military action when there is a spike in orders. Here’s what the theory states.
What Is The Pentagon Pizza Index?
A theory, which dates back to the Cold War era, holds that there is a spike in the number of pizza orders when there is a possibility of military action. A report by First Post mentions how, before major events, there is often a spike in pizza orders near the Pentagon. The assumption behind this is the fact that defence personnel are generally very busy. So, they often turn to quick comfort food, such as pizza, to quell their hunger pangs. Quoting Pizza Pentagon Theory on X, it claims pizzerias near the Pentagon and the CIA were reporting above average traffic, which surrounds the escalating tensions in the Middle East.
A Spike In Pizza Orders
Another report by the Economic Times mentions that it is also often regarded as a pizza meter or the Pentagon pizza theory. Observing the situation in the 1980s and 1990s, local pizza restaurants would often encounter a late-night surge in orders during the national moments. Since it is believed that government officials usually work late into the night during such high-pressure times. So, food deliveries generally see a spike! The report also referred to previous historical cases when the pizza index had increased.

Pentagon Pizza Report Is Not A Critical Intelligence Approach
The Pentagon Pizza Report, an X account has been tracking data for pizza locations near the Pentagon and the city. Analysing Google Maps, live visits and popular times data, it mentions a sharp deviation from typical patterns. However, even though this has been gaining increased popularity, it’s worth mentioning that this is just seen as a cultural phenomenon and not a critical intelligence approach.
