This diet drastically reduces carbohydrate intake, forcing the body to burn fat for energy instead of its preferred source, glucose (derived from carbohydrates). The keto flu arises from a three-pronged attack on your body’s equilibrium. Firstly, restricting carbs forces your body to switch its energy source from readily available glucose to fat-derived ketones, leading to withdrawal symptoms. Secondly, the keto diet can deplete electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, essential for proper function. This depletion manifests as muscle cramps, dizziness, and fatigue. Lastly, the diet can lead to dehydration through increased urination, further worsening symptoms like headaches and fatigue.

The keto flu can throw your body into a state of unrest. It’s common to experience fatigue and lethargy, along with headaches and difficulty concentrating. Muscle cramps and weakness can also arise. Nausea, vomiting, and dizziness might add to the discomfort. Furthermore, irritability, mood swings, and trouble sleeping can disrupt your daily routine.  Digestive issues like constipation or diarrhoea are also possible side effects.

The keto flu is a short-lived condition that can be managed by staying hydrated, incorporating electrolyte-rich foods, and consuming healthy fats. Staying hydrated, taking electrolyte supplements, and prioritising rest are essential steps to minimise discomfort. For new keto users, a gradual reduction in carbs can ease the transition and reduce the severity of the flu. Remember to be patient with your body and adjust exercise intensity accordingly.
