Mixologist Nitin Tewari posted a video of him answering the much-asked question — should you eat before or after you drink alcohol? In his video, Nitin explains the science behind how alcohol is absorbed in the body. In his words, when we first take a sip of alcohol it flows down to the stomach. If one has eaten something before, the stomach gets busy breaking down the food. So, alcohol, in this case, tends to remain in the stomach for longer.

Meanwhile, if one drinks alcohol on an empty stomach, it immediately passes through the stomach and settles down in the smaller intestine. Here, the smaller intestine has a bigger surface area, so the alcohol gets absorbed by the body quickly and reaches the bloodstream in no time.

There’s Science To It!

The stomach absorbs alcohol at a slower rate as compared to the small intestine. This means that one hasn’t eaten anything, the alcohol swiftly passes through the stomach and reaches the small intestine, which has a bigger surface area. This allows for quicker absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream. This then travels to the heart and the brain giving one a buzzing feeling.

Since the stomach takes longer to absorb alcohol than the small intestine, one tends to feel intoxicated quickly if they drink alcohol on an empty stomach.
