Located in Kashmir on the shores of the Wular Lake, Zurimanz village has grown in popularity among Indian and foreign travellers. In the Bandipora district of northern Kashmir, this little village—known as “Bangladesh” in Jammu and Kashmir—is situated roughly 69 kilometres from Srinagar. According to reports, it is thought to have been founded in East Pakistan following the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict.
Zurimanz Village, Kashmir’s Bangladesh
The settlement was established following the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Zurimanz village was destroyed by a terrible fire that broke out during the fighting between East and West Pakistan. The residents of Zurimanz started restoring their houses in the village as East Pakistan changed into Bangladesh, and the area came to be known as Kashmir’s Bangladesh.
One of the biggest freshwater lakes in South Asia, Wular Lake, is directly next to the hamlet. It was suggested by two brothers from the area, Firdous Ahmad Bhat and Ghulam Hassan, to market Zurimanz as a travel destination. They allegedly came up with a scheme and built the village’s first shikhara, which was launched on Wular Lake, in an effort to draw in more visitors, create jobs for residents, and advance environmentally friendly travel in Zurimanz.
By creating homestays and other amenities in the hamlet, the local administration hopes to make it easier for visitors to experience the traditional way of life. In addition, the government intends to hold several festivals that will showcase the customs and culture of the area.
