The German airport strike caused the cancellation of some 3,400 flights, affecting up to 500,000 travellers, as reported by the German airport association ADV. The airports in large cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne were affected the most.

Frankfurt Airport, the country’s busiest, has completely suspended boarding passengers, with authorities stating transit travel will also be impacted.

According to Hindustan Times, the Verdi trade union, which also has ground-handling service operators and public sector workers as its members, organised the strike. The employees who joined the strike are about 23,000 and have asked for higher remuneration as well as a better work environment.

The union announced that industrial action had been inevitable as employers did not make any suitable offers in negotiations during collective bargaining.

Staff Call For Improved Pay And Conditions

The centre of the German airport strikes is a call for an 8% wage increase or at least a boost of €350 a month. Staff are also calling for increased bonuses, particularly for those in highly stressful jobs.

Verdi union deputy chairman Christine Behle recognised the disruption to passengers but emphasised that the strike was needed to bring negotiations forward.

‘We apologise for the inconvenience to passengers, but without industrial action, there is no progress on negotiations,’ she stated.

But the employers have declined to grant these concessions, and the impasse has dragged on for months. The union insists that unless a reasonable wage proposal is placed on the table, there may be additional strikes, extending travel disruptions.

With no immediate solution in sight, travellers can look forward to more cancellations and delays. Travellers are advised to call airlines for updates and arrange alternative travel. Those with urgent travel needs may have to look for other modes of transport until normalcy returns.

Travel within the country, depending on whether the Germany airport strikes succeed, will either revert to normal or remain in chaos.
