In a recent development, the Indian government may restrict air conditioners in homes, shops, and vehicles from going below 20°C. According to India Today, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar announced that ACs in residential areas, commercial establishments, and cars would only be set between 20°C and 28°C. This step aims to address climate change, global warming and rising temperatures.

As reported by India Today, this new rule could boost energy efficiency, reduce power demand, and even cut down on monthly electricity bills. The minister also added that ACs will have a fixed minimum temperature of 20°C and a maximum of 28°C. This new rule will apply to commercial areas, residential areas areas and also to the vehicles.

New Air Conditioners In The Market With Set Limits

Currently, most ACs in the market allow users to set the temperature as low as 16°C and as high as 30°C. But if this rule gets approved, new ACs will come set with these fixed limits. Plus, this fixed setting might also ensure a more uniform cooling with more energy efficiency.

As per 2020 guidelines by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), all room and car ACs must come with a default setting of 24°C. For commercial buildings, the temperature could be adjusted between 24°C and 25°C, which balances both energy consumption and the comfort of the user.
