An ambitious expedition to raft the entire Indian stretch of the Brahmaputra River was launched on Saturday by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, aiming to boost adventure tourism and environmental awareness. The pioneering month-long journey, organised by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports or NIMAS, will cover 916 kilometres from Gelling, Arunachal Pradesh, to Dhubri-Hatsingimari, Assam. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this particular river rafting expedition.
Why Is The Brahmaputra River Rafting Expedition Historic?
According to an article that was recently published by the Travel and Trade Journal, the expedition was flagged off on January 14, 2025. The journey will span a period of a month. Commencing on 14 January and concluding on 14 February, the expedition marks the first attempt of its kind to navigate this challenging waterway.
At the flag-off ceremony in Itanagar, NIMAS Director Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal briefed Chief Minister Khandu, who serves as the institute’s Vice President, about the expedition’s goals and anticipated challenges. Khandu expressed his support for the team and looked forward to welcoming them upon their return.
The Defence spokesperson emphasised that this historic endeavour would not only showcase human determination but also contribute significantly to establishing river rafting as a prominent adventure sport in India.
All Of The Other Details That You Would Need To Know
Concurrent with this initiative, the Indian Army has launched a spiritual tour under ‘Operation Sadbhavana and the Vibrant Village Programme’ for 22 senior villagers from West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
The programme, which began on Friday, provides many participants their first opportunity to travel beyond their remote villages. The tour encompasses visits to significant spiritual and cultural landmarks, including the World Buddhist Centre, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Dalai Lama Temple and Mahabodhi Temple.
This initiative reflects the Army’s commitment to strengthening national integration by connecting border communities with India’s cultural heritage. The combined initiatives demonstrate a concerted effort to promote both adventure tourism and cultural integration in India’s northeastern region.
