Mumbai’s air quality has recently gotten worse, with some locations in the city having an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 200 (poor) in the last few days. Two weeks after the monsoon ended, the city’s air quality got worse. But with the new guidelines for air pollution mitigation, Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar says that the air quality will start improving in the next two months.
Mumbai’s Air Quality To Improve Soon
According to Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar, it could take up to two months for Mumbai’s air quality to improve despite all the measures taken to mitigate air pollution.
At a press conference held at the headquarters of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai’s guardian minister, Kesarkar, stated that the primary source of air pollution in the city is dust particles. On Wednesday, the BMC released guidelines for mitigating air pollution from building sites and other sources.
Citizens will witness the results of this action in the next month or two, as it has now been initiated, according to Kesarkar. According to him, the Maharashtra government has formed a committee to investigate the matter, and it has begun working on it. (As per Business Standard)

Rules For Air Pollution Mitigation
The rules for mitigating air pollution were released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday.
- Anywhere inside the BMC’s boundaries, open burning is strictly prohibited. This includes potential trash-burning locations as well as landfills.
- Every project taller than 70 meters must have a minimum 35-foot-tall wall surrounding the site made of tin sheets.
- All buildings that are “under demolition” or still under construction must be covered from all sides with tarpaulin, green cloth, or jute sheets.
- Water must be continuously sprayed or sprinkled when a structure is being demolished. When loading and unloading products at building sites, water fogging should be used.
- The recommendations also requested that sensor-based air pollution monitors be installed at construction sites.
- When pollution levels reach set limits, action should be taken right away. Ward officers are responsible for deploying teams consisting of two engineers, a police officer, and a marshal to enforce air pollution control laws.
- The municipal authority granted 30 days and 15 days, respectively, for the installation of fog guns and sprinklers at construction and other work sites. (As per Business Standard)

Drugs-Free Mumbai Campaign
According to Kesarkar, the firms in charge of major infrastructure projects in Mumbai have consented to take part in the effort to improve the quality of the air. He admitted that it is the responsibility of the government to provide clean air to the citizens of Mumbai.
The education ministry’s chief organiser, Kesarkar, also announced the launch of the ‘Drugs-Free Mumbai’ campaign.
According to him, Mumbai City is to be made to be lovely, healthy, and joyful. Therefore, it is essential to keep narcotics out of cities. He said that 452 schools and colleges in Mumbai will be a part of the effort, adding that schools and colleges will be included in this campaign along with their students. (As per Business Standard)
