Morocco is a beautiful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty! If you’re planning on visiting this country soon, we recommend adding Le Jardin Secret in Marrakesh to your itinerary. Founded more than 400 years ago, this palace complex is known for its traditional Islamic garden and offers an oasis in the middle of bustling Marrakesh.
All You Need To Know About Le Jardin Secret In Marrakesh, Morocco
Nestled in the heart of Medina in Marrakesh, Le Jardin Secret is a beautiful garden that dates back to the second half of the 16th century. According to the official website, the complex foundation was laid by the Saadian Dynasty. The original structure was destroyed by the end of the 17th century. In the 19th century, it was rebuilt at the behest of an influential kaid (commander in chief) of the Atlas Mountains. The entire city underwent great development during this period, which allowed the garden to flourish.
Over the years, Le Jardin Secret became the home of some of Morocco and Marrakesh’s most important political figures. However, it fell into ruin after the death of its last owner. In 2008, the local authorities proposed the restoration of this garden. After years of work, in 2016, the garden finally opened to the public.
Reportedly, the complex is spread across 4,000 square metres and includes a 17-metre-high tower and two beautiful gardens. The water in Le Jardin Secret is supplied via a khettara, an underground irrigation system built in the 11th century. It is said that this system was used to carry water to the city’s mosques, hammams and fountains centuries ago. Marrakesh truly blends medieval with modern times!
