The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has reassured its commuters and the Delhi Police that the Delhi Metro is the safest means of travel in the city. In a statement, they highlighted that Delhi Metro has more than 14,600 CCTVs across its network and they’re taking steps to cover all possible blind spots to amp up the security in its premises.
DMRC Insists That Delhi Metro Is The Safest Means Of Travel In Delhi-NCR
The Delhi Police recently wrote a letter to DMRC and asked them to implement measures to prevent security breaches and suicides on its premises. Responding to this, DMRC assured them that the metro is one of the ‘safest means of travel in Delhi-NCR.’ In their statement, DMRC further highlighted that the rapid rail in the capital has an extensive CCTV network of over 14,600 cameras.
To reassure its commuters, DMRC also mentioned that metro stations also have police patrolling ‘through notified police stations under the jurisdiction of Delhi Metro rail police across all its lines.’ As per a Business Standard report, DMRC also said that it will work with the Delhi Police to ‘do the best possible for the safety of its passengers.’
Key Concerns Of Delhi Police About Safety In The Metro
In its letter, the Delhi Police outlined several areas of concern to DMRC. They urged DMRC to enhance CCTV surveillance of railway tracks, improve lightning in dark areas, trim tree branches near metro stations, increase security presence near platforms, and install platform screen doors (PSD) at all stations.
The Delhi Police also pointed out the two recent incidents of graffiti found on train coaches at Yamuna Bank yard and Shahdara Metro Station. They requested better CCTV surveillance to avoid such incidents. In its response, DMRC mentioned that it would identify and cover all dark spots at the metro stations. They will also install new CCTVs wherever they deem fit.
We hope that DMRC implements Delhi Police’s suggestions and takes account of all the concerns that they pointed to in the letter. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments.
