Nestled on Japan’s Honshu Island, Woven City is an upcoming smart and sustainable utopian city. Spread across 175 acres of land, this city is being developed by Toyota and brought to life by Danish architect Bjarjk Ingels. What’s special about this city is that it is one of the most futuristic cities in the world. Think driverless cars, hydrogen-powered electricity, and everything in between – this city will have it all! And seeing the steady progress in its construction, Toyota has announced that Woven City is likely to get its first residents by the end of the year.

This futuristic urban living space is being called Toyota’s “living laboratory”. This is mainly because the company plans to experiment with renewable and energy-efficient self-driving vehicles, known as ‘E-palettes’ here. It will also have an integrated system of various elements that will all work together to give a sustainable, tech-enriched life to its residents.

Set just a few miles away from Mount Fuji, the Woven City was first announced in 2021 and costs around £8 billion. Toyota has since then been working to make this futuristic city into a reality.

The city will have separate paths throughout for E-palettes, pedestrians, and cyclists. With this, Toyota aims to collect data and improve its understanding of local traffic patterns. Furthermore, the city will have hydrogen-powered fuel cells as the main energy supply. This will minimise emissions and control pollution levels.

There will also be ‘smart homes’ in this city. These homes will be equipped with sensors throughout the city that will help ease communication among residents, buildings, and vehicles. They will use AI to maximise their efficiency and potential. In its first phase, the city will have 360 residents which will include Toyota employees as well.

After some observations, they will welcome up to 2,000 individuals to stay in the city. This is also Toyota’s ‘mass human experiment’ to understand human psychology with technology.

Now that’s a smart city through and through! Would you like to live in a futuristic city like this? Let us know in the comments!
