With Population Of Over 1 Crore, Bengaluru Needs More Traffic Volunteers; Currently It Has 900

Bengaluru is one of the world’s most traffic-congested cities. According to a recent study, the Silicon Valley of India loses a whopping  ₹19,725 crore every year due to traffic congestion, delays, stoppage of signals and other issues. To combat this, the Bengaluru City Police Traffic Warden Organization (BCPTWO) conducts recruitment drives to hire traffic volunteers. Here’s more about its importance.

Bengaluru Police Seek More Traffic Volunteers

According to a report by The New Indian Express, Deputy Chief Traffic Warden, Srinivas Shenoy, stated that despite conducting recruitment drives twice a year, traffic volunteer numbers in Bengaluru are discouraging. Currently, with a population of over one crore, Bengaluru has 900 traffic volunteers. This includes only 62 women.

Srinivas Shenoy stated to TNIE that they currently have 900 volunteers. After the COVID-19 pandemic, this number has increased from 350 to 900. But with the city having 40,000 junctions, the number is still small and he described it as practically impossible for the current volunteer force to regulate all these junctions in the city.

Furthermore, he explained the recruitment drive and stated that the operations revolve around 3 core divisions—education, engineering and regulation. The education division is about conducting educational programs to raise awareness about traffic safety among students. The engineering division is about improving road infrastructure and developing the city’s infrastructure. Since construction vehicles create traffic chaos at night, volunteers work with concerned agencies to solve these issues.

Here’s What The Duties Include

When it comes to regulation division, every traffic warden spends 16 hours on traffic duty in a month. And when it comes to road accidents in Bengaluru, Srinivas Shenoy stated that there needs to be increased emphasis on safety awareness. He says giving priority to safety over hate is of utmost importance. So even the public needs to actively participate and follow safety rules to avoid accidents.

Similarly, wearing helmets and following safety regulations can help. Srinivas Rao stated to TNIE that BCPTWO is a self-driven organisation that focuses on recognising its volunteers to motivate them. He believes if the government acknowledges the traffic volunteers, they can perform better. The volunteers include doctors, engineers, teachers, business people and more. The traffic wardens work twice a week and even take part in special duties during air shows, cricket matches and more.
