India’s longest ropeway— connecting Uttarakhand’s beloved hill stations, Dehradun and Mussoorie — is one of the most awaited infrastructure projects in the tourism industry. The work has commenced in this 5.5km ropeway that promises to cut travel time between the twin cities by a whopping 1.25 hours. Phase I of this project will be ready by September 2026.

Imagine savouring a birds-eye view of Uttarakhand on Asia’s longest ropeway from Dehradun to Mussoorie. A journey that will take 1.5 hours, in the future will encompass a mere 15 minutes of your precious time. Moreover, you’ll get to relish panoramic views of the snowcapped peaks while you’re at it. This is the future of Uttarakhand’s tourism.

The Mussoorie Sky Car Company Pvt commenced work on India’s longest ropeway spanning a length of 5.5km between the twin cities of Dehradun and Mussoorie. Phase I of the ₹300 crore mono-cable ropeway project will be ready by September 2026. For the first time in the nation, visitors will get to travel on 10-seater diamond cabins that can accommodate 1300 passengers per-hour-per-direction.

Instead of driving 33km between Dehradun and Mussoorie, tourists can opt for a scenic ropeway ride that will ferry them in just 15 minutes instead of 1.5 to 3 hours by road. The 10-seater diamond cabins are fully ventilated, and enclosed and have automatic opening and closing doors. The all-weather ropeway is a perfect transportation system that ensures comfortable and convenient travel for both locals and tourists. It will operate throughout the year, come rain or snow.

Phase I Ready By Sept 2026; Other Benefits Of This Projects

Another benefit is that it will decongest Uttarakhand’s already crowded roads, especially during the festive season. It’s built both for tourism reasons as well as urban mobility between Dehradun and Mussoorie. Owais Altaf Syed, Group Director, FIL Industries Limited revealed in a statement that they are very excited to launch this project in Uttarakhand.

After their successful ropeway in Patnitop in Jammu this is the company’s second ropeway project. Moreover, he further added, that it is a sustainable project that brings both revenue and employment in Uttarakhand. In Patnitop, the ropeway cut road travel time and reduced vehicular pollution. Authorities in Uttarakhand are expecting similar benefits in the state as well on completion of the sustainable 5.5k long ropeway system.

Both Dehradun and Mussoorie may witness a rise in hospitality, retail and food and beverage ventures on the launch of the ropeway. For now, you can expect the Green Gondola’s Phase I to be ready by September 2026. There’s state-of-the-art infrastructure, sustainable travel, decongested roads, upcoming food and beverage spots, shopping hubs and more to look forward to in the near future.
