We have heard many heart-breaking incidents of giraffes being poached in Kenya. However, conservationists are now using technology to save giraffes. They have fitted the world’s only known white giraffe with a tracking device to save the species from extinction. The majestic white the giraffe has a rare genetic disorder called leucism, which results in partial loss of pigmentation in animals. This, in turn, leads to a pale, or patchy colouration of the skin. The consequences of the disease in animals are similar to albinism in humans.

The White Giraffe Is The Last Surviving In Her Family

The white giraffe is the last surviving in the family of three after poachers slaughtered a female giraffe and her 7-month-old calf in March 2020. The bodies of these majestic animals were found in June some 111 days after the other two were killed. The GPS Tracker Will Help Monitor The Giraffe’s Movements

The GPS tracker placed on the ossicone (horn) of the giraffe, will help save the giraffe from poachers. It will give hourly updates of the location of the giraffe, enabling the rangers to monitor his daily movements and keep him safe from poachers. 5 Hirola Antelopes Also Got GPS Trackers

Apart from the giraffe, GPS trackers were also fitted on five other Hirola antelope in an attempt to conserve the world’s most endangered antelope. Ishaqbini, was established as a community conservancy to preserve the ecosystem within Ijara, Garissa County, while sustaining their livelihoods. To date, 58 people from the community, including 24 scouts, have received direct employment.
