A sustainable river cruise service is set to launch along Delhi’s Yamuna River, aiming to boost tourism while prioritising environmental considerations. The initiative will develop the stretch of the river between Wazirabad Barrage or Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur or Shani Temple for tourism operations. This particular stretch sprawls across six kilometres. The Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation or the DTTDC issued a request for a quotation to identify a suitable operator for the project.
Yamuna Cruise: New Eco-Friendly Ferry Service On The River
According to an article that was recently published by Moneycontrol, the quotation request was made on February 28, 2025. The selected company will provide two electric-solar hybrid vessels to run the service, offering an environmentally friendly water transportation alternative.
Each vessel will accommodate between 20 and 30 passengers and operate at speeds of five to seven knots. The boats must be air-conditioned and no more than two years old. What is more, they are equipped with essential facilities, including inboard bio-toilets.
These bio-toilets have zero discharge, announcement systems and safety jackets for all passengers. The operator will be required to ensure a minimum of four round trips daily, with each journey covering approximately seven to eight kilometres.
Features Of The River Cruise
The cruise route will begin and end at Sonia Vihar. Safety and reliability will be paramount priorities for passengers, crew members and other river users. Several government bodies are collaborating on the initiative.
These include the Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Jal Board, DTTDC, the Inland Waterways Authority of India, and the irrigation and flood control department. The latter will provide shore amenities, including charging infrastructure and floating jetties for the cruises.
The project represents a forward-thinking approach to urban tourism, combining recreational opportunities with sustainable transport solutions. By utilising clean energy sources to power the vessels, the service aims to minimise environmental impact. It will also offer visitors and residents alike a new perspective on Delhi’s waterways.
Once operational, the cruise service is expected to enhance river tourism in the capital. It will provide an attractive option for those seeking to experience the city from a different vantage point.
