Yamuna Floodplains To Get A Makeover With Water Bodies & Walking Track

Delhi NCR is home to lush green biodiversity parks like Gurgaon’s Aravalli Biodiversity Park, Tilpath Valley Biodiversity Park and Nizamuddin’s Sunder Nursery. These parks are famous among nature lovers, birdwatchers, joggers and morning walkers. Now, another similar park might come up in the heart of the city in a span of three months. This biodiversity park on the Yamuna floodplains near Mayur Vihar will cover a sprawling expanse of 247 acres. It will have four water bodies, a hiking track and diverse varieties of trees. The concept of this biodiversity park reminds us of Sri Lanka’s Diyatha Uyana park, which also has a beautiful walking trail by a crystal clear lake. Read on to know the details.

Biodiversity Park With Four Water Bodies And Walking Track To Come Up On Yamuna Floodplains

The Delhi Developing Authority ( DDA) has started the groundwork for setting up a 247-acre biodiversity park near Mayur Vihar. The authorities are trying to complete it within three months. According to The Indian Express report, referring to the park, a DDA official said, “The project is being monitored by the L-G and the Yamuna Monitoring Committee. The L-G reviewed the progress of the project on August 21.” They have already developed some walking tracks and two water bodies. Also, to boost the green cover in the city, the forest department is mulling over creating four new forest areas.

Park Development As Per The Directions Of The National Green Tribunal

The development of the biodiversity park is taking place as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal. A year ago, in September, a National Green Tribunal bench had stated, “DDA may undertake physical demarcation of the entire floodplain within three months, and thereafter, after taking re-possession within next three months, fence such areas and convert them into biodiversity parks as per the action plan proposed by them.” The statement added, “DDA will be liable to pay a sum of  ₹5 lakh per month till compliance of this direction from April 1, 2020, which may be recovered from the officers and deposited with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for the restoration of the environment. The Monitoring Committee will look into compliance.”
