According to an article that was recently published by The Free Press Journal or the FPJ, the bridge is a crucial component of Mumbai’s infrastructure development. It spans 827 metres, with 699 metres over the sea and a 128-metre approach road.
Its distinctive bow arch string girders, each measuring 143 metres in length, 27 metres in width, and 31 metres in height, weigh 2,400 tonnes. The broader Coastal Road project, stretching 10.58 kilometres from Princess Street Flyover to Worli, has reached 95% completion.
The remaining section is scheduled for completion by May 2025. This included a 7.5-kilometre promenade from Priyadarshini Park to Worli. Additional features, including three interchanges at Worli and Haji Ali, alongside median development and car parks, are expected to be finished by late 2025.
North Channel Bridge To Open To The Public From Today
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Fadnavis highlighted that project permissions were secured during the first Mahayuti government term. The meeting was also attended by Ministers Ashish Shelar and Mangal Prabhat Lodha.
The ambitious initiative has been opening in phases since March 2024. The project commenced in October 2018 with a budget of ₹13,983 crore. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or the BMC, the new infrastructure has achieved a 70 per cent reduction in travel time and a 34 per cent decrease in fuel consumption. This will significantly benefit Mumbai’s commuters.
