After more than a decade of eager anticipation and numerous delays, the dream of a passenger ferry service between India and Sri Lanka is becoming a reality on October 10. This monumental maritime link will connect Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, India, with Kankesanthurai in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, drastically cutting travel time and offering new possibilities for both nations.

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), in charge of the operation, believes this service will unlock an affordable and convenient travel option. It will make it easier for people to explore cultural, religious, and commercial connections across these neighbouring regions. As the ferry’s engine roars to life, it revives a once-thriving maritime tradition that has been dormant for far too long.
As per reports from the Indian Express, the ferry, named Cheriyapani, will transport passengers between the two nations. While ticket prices remain undisclosed, travellers will be permitted to bring luggage weighing up to 40 kg at no extra cost. Cheriyapani has the capacity to accommodate 150 passengers. Tamil Nadu Minister for Public Works, E V Velu, also emphasised the state government’s involvement in this project.

A Rekindling Of Maritime Heritage
This initiative marks the revival of a historic maritime connection that dates back to the early 1900s. The Indo-Ceylon Express, or Board Mail, previously facilitated travel between Chennai and Colombo via the Thoothukudi port but ceased operations in 1982 due to the civil war in Sri Lanka. According to the Indian Express reports, the resumption of ferry services follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on passenger transportation by sea signed by the two nations in 2011.

The reintroduction of this ferry service is expected to have a positive impact on religious tourism, commerce, and trade along the coastal regions of India and Sri Lanka. The affordable mode of travel provided by the ferry is anticipated to attract tour operators and budget-conscious travellers. Residents of Tamil Nadu and other parts of India will gain easier access to prominent places of worship in Colombo and southern Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan pilgrims will also find convenient transportation to sacred sites in India and historical temple cities.
