The sudden coronavirus-induced lockdown in 2020 was a fatal blow to many businesses. A large number of people lost their jobs. Many others bore the brunt of massive salary cuts. Debjyoti’s salary was also deducted to half and this pushed his family into an acute financial crisis. Amid the harrowing challenges, his 21-year old sister, Jyotirmoyee, who was pursuing a diploma in engineering from a private college, came forward to help.
She, along with Debjyoti, decided to convert their father’s old grocery shop, which had remained vacant for the last 10 years, into a phuchka store. They named the brand Fuchkawala. The journey was not easy for the two. But after overcoming the hurdles, Jyotirmoyee calls herself a proud, successful phuchka maker now. “The Start Was Extremely Difficult, But Today We Have Made A Place In Many People’s Hearts”…
In a Facebook post, Jyotirmoyee has stated, ” The start was extremely difficult. We had to hear tauntings for turning into phuchka sellers from being engineering students. Today, it is about eight months since we started our business. And we have made a place in many people’s hearts.” At Fuchkawala, 8 classic phuchkas are served at ₹10.

The Earnings Have Helped Jyotirmoyee Pursue Her B.Tech Dreams; She Aims To Become A Big Engineer Someday
Jyotirmoyee dreams of becoming an established engineer in future. Earlier, while she was doing her diploma, she had dreamt of taking up B.Tech. Today, the profits from her business are helping her achieve her dreams. Speaking to Curly Tales, she said, “We had started our business on October 18, 2020. Our business had picked up quite well right after its launch. Now, the sales have reduced a bit due to the second wave. But with the profits earned, I am pursuing my B.Tech degree in computer engineering.”

In her Facebook post, she said, “I dream of becoming a big engineer someday. But I will never forget the contribution of phuchka in shaping my dream. I want to make Fuchkawala a big brand one day with everyone’s support.”
