1. Gujarati Thali: Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, Kalbadevi

Looking for less oily and healthy food that tastes good? Head over to Shree Thaker’s. They serve a grand Gujarati Thali is a popular thali restaurant for a long time. You can choose from wheat chapatis, bajra rotis or jowar rotis to go along with your meals. They offer daal, sabzi and kadi with each thali. You might also receive a few of their soft dhoklas, jalebis and other sweet items like moong daal halwa along with the meal.

As you enter Maharaja Bhog, you will be given a welcome drink that will prepare you for 30 items in the thali. This place serves 30 menu items for each day. You can get started with deep fried papads, farsan and mini tikkis. Go ahead with staples like puri, roti, karela, biryani, dal khichdi, 2 types of kadhi, daal, 3 types of gravy and curd. But the main attraction is the desserts. Get prepared to be floored by Chickoo halwa, Seetaphal basundi and Rabdi malpua. 

Rajasthani Thali

4. Malvani Thali: Sadichha, Bandra East

Sadichha is located in the bylanes of a Government Colony, bang opposite MIG Cricket Grounds. And even at that, it’s a blink and miss affair. Highly recommended is the prawns thali. It comes with prawns curry, sukke prawns, white rice, two chapattis and a dal. The Sukke prawns is a very generous portion of prawns, mixed with shredded coconut and some masala. As an accompaniment, the red chilli coconut chutney is awesome and a small bowl of solkadi adds tang to fire! You can also opt for a surmai thali, which has a large piece of fried Surmai replacing the prawns sukke, and fish curry replacing the prawns curry from the prawns thali. Sea-food lovers, this one’s got to be your ultimate find!

Malvani Thali

5. South Indian Thali: Ramanayak Udipi, Matunga East

Matunga is known for its numerous Udipi restaurants, and therefore it comes as no surprise that this place should have the best South Indian thali in Mumbai. They serve 2 kinds of thalis here – limited & unlimited. On request, they could serve your thali on a banana leaf (seems way more authentic than the steel plates!). Watching the waiter serve you is like watching a soldier in parade – precision & clockwork. The procession starts with serving of Salt and Pickle, 3 Vegetables, Fulka rotis, Rasam and sambhar, Curd , butter milk , Papad & Finally the sweet dish. They have a choice of Payasam or Shrikhand. Unfortunately, you can only get one per thali.

South Indian Thali

Our Tip: Anyone looking for non-spicy, simple yet varied, pure vegetarian and a delicious authentic Udupi, South Indian meal should definitely visit this place. On most days, you will find a waiting line, but do not be disheartened, a meal at this place is worth the wait!
