Akasa Air has confirmed it will commence operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), becoming the second major airline after IndiGo to do so. The announcement strengthens confidence in the twin-airport strategy for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). NMIA is being developed to relieve air traffic pressure from the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Akasa’s move signals growing trust in NMIA’s future as a central aviation hub. The airline’s decision reflects its aim to expand operations and improve connectivity across domestic and international routes.

Akasa Air will launch operations with more than 100 domestic departures each week from NMIA. This initial phase sets the groundwork for further expansion. The airline plans to scale up to over 300 weekly domestic and 50 international flights in the winter schedule. According to a company statement, the expanded flight plan will support Akasa’s growing customer base and regional network. NMIA’s modern facilities and improved logistics are expected to ease aircraft turnaround times and enhance schedule reliability. This operational flexibility gives Akasa the scope to explore new markets and respond to rising demand efficiently.

NMIA To Support Akasa’s Long-Term Growth Plans
Akasa is positioning itself as a long-term stakeholder in NMIA’s success. The airline is working towards establishing up to ten aircraft parking bases by the end of FY2027. According to Business Standard, this aligns with Akasa’s ambition to build a robust infrastructure backbone. The airline also intends to expand its international presence, targeting key destinations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. These regions continue to show steady demand from Indian travellers. The Navi Mumbai base will serve as a strategic launchpad for Akasa’s international network, giving it a competitive edge over rivals.

Navi Mumbai Airport Targets Major Passenger And Cargo Capacity
Navi Mumbai International Airport is a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL) and CIDCO. AAHL holds a 74% stake, while CIDCO owns the remaining 26%. In its first phase, the airport will handle 20 million passengers annually. As reported by The Economic Times, its eventual capacity will reach 90 million passengers and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo. These figures position NMIA as one of India’s largest aviation hubs in the coming decade. The airport’s launch will ease traffic congestion at CSMIA and provide improved services for passengers and airlines alike. Its location will also enhance accessibility for residents of Navi Mumbai and surrounding regions.
Akasa Air’s commitment to NMIA comes soon after IndiGo’s similar announcement, reaffirming industry confidence in the new airport. The dual-airport model for Mumbai is gradually taking shape, offering more flight options and smoother travel experiences. Akasa’s partnership with NMIA will not only strengthen its route network but also contribute to India’s long-term aviation goals. As more airlines consider operations from NMIA, the airport is poised to become a key player in both domestic and international air travel.
