When June began and no rainfall was witnessed by the city, the water levels of all seven potable water source lakes were depleting. The BMC had also announced water cuts in many places in Mumbai. But now, as July has welcomed heavy rainfall into the city, three out of the seven lakes are now overflowing. Yes, days after Tulsi Lake overflowed, Tansa and Vihar Lakes are now overflowing.

The key sources of potable water in Mumbai are witnessing good levels of capacity these days, thanks to heavy rains. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed that Mumbai’s Tansa and Vihar lakes are now overflowing.
By far out of the seven reservoirs in Mumbai, Tulsi, Tansa, and Vihar have overflowed. The rest of the lakes have already crossed 50% capacity. The seven lakes that provide potable water in Mumbai city are Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, and Bhatsa.
BMC has shared the video of the lakes overflowing with information on the timing. The Vihar lake overflowed at 12:48am while the Tansa lake overflowed at 4:35am on July 26.

From the seven reservoirs, Mumbai receives 3,800 MLD (millions of litres per day) of water. Notably, the BMC enforced a 10% water cut here starting on July 1 after Mumbai’s water supply lakes’ levels dropped as a result of insufficient rain at the time in their catchment districts.
The Powai lake in Mumbai also began overflowing earlier this month, but according to BMC authorities, its water is not used for drinking.
According to a press release from the Thane district administration, a discharge of 1,100 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water has begun from the reservoir as a result of the Tansa lake overflowing. (As per Mid-day)
