Air India Flight Skids Off Mumbai Runway, Bursting 3 Tyres; No Injuries Reported

A wet Monday morning at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at Mumbai turned tense just before 9:30 am, when an Air India flight from Kochi skidded off the main runway during landing. The incident briefly disrupted airport operations and triggered a swift emergency response on the ground.

According to The Times Of India, The A320 aircraft, operating as AI-2744, veered off course shortly after touchdown and rolled into a patch of unpaved ground before finding its way back onto a taxiway. It eventually came to a stop and taxied to a parking stand. The aircraft’s deviation from Runway 27, thankfully, did not cause any injuries, but it did cause damage. Three tyres burst during the excursion. The aircraft had landed near the normal touchdown zone before drifting sideways about 16 to 17 metres off the paved surface, a source told The Times Of India. The plane was not disabled and did not require towing assistance.

Visibility at the time was low, and rain was relentless; these made up for hardly ideal conditions for a stable landing. While the extent of the aircraft’s damage is being evaluated, initial reports suggest it was minor and largely confined to the landing gear and undercarriage. The incident shut down Mumbai’s primary runway, forcing airport officials to immediately activate Runway 14/32, the shorter secondary strip used during emergencies or maintenance. Given Mumbai’s notoriously tight flight schedules, even a brief closure can stack up delays across the board, but quick action by airside teams helped avoid major fallout.
