Air India has introduced a luxurious overhaul with its Air India Retrofit programme, a $400 million programme to transform its whole fleet. The high-profile programme by the Tata Group will revamp more than 100 planes so that passengers can enjoy increased comfort, superior cabin interiors, and state-of-the-art facilities. The airline recently showcased its first retrofitted aircraft, VT-EXN, an A320neo, marking the beginning of a major overhaul.

The Air India Retrofit project includes 67 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, of which 40 are Boeing. The first of these, VT-EXN, was completely renovated, with new seats, improved interiors, and a new cabin design. The carrier will modernise 27 A320neo planes by the third quarter of 2025, adding more than 3,500 new Economy Class seats, 600+ Premium Economy seats, and 200 Business Class seats.

The massive refurbishment includes fitting premium leather upholstery, high-grade fabric, and soft carpeting to enhance passenger comfort. The refurbished A320neos will have these facilities:

  • Business Class – 8 luxurious seats
  • Premium Economy – 24 extra legroom seats
  • Economy Class – 132 spacious seats

The retrofit also features calming cabin lighting, more legroom, and contemporary amenities such as portable electronic device (PED) holders and USB ports.

In its thrust towards improving customer experience, Air India is also looking at its wide-body planes. A total of 40 Boeing 777 and 787 planes will be retrofitted similarly. The first of the B787 aircraft will be dispatched for retrofitting next month.

The airline will also deliver a consistent world-class flying experience by making sure that its new and refurbished planes offer contemporary features and a hassle-free journey.

The new fleet will be operated in domestic sectors and short-haul international sectors, ensuring the same quality for all its services.

Ever since the  Tata Group took over the airline in 2022, Air India has been committed to redefining its brand and customer service. In addition to retrofitting, the airline is increasing its network and fleet size, with new wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft added recently to select routes.

With Air India Retrofit, the airline is leading the charge in the aviation business, with plans to offer more comfortable, and advanced flying conditions for passengers.

This is more than a beautification exercise—this is the future of aviation, where flying becomes more convenient, more efficient, and, most importantly, better.
