You would assume that an airline CEO wouldn’t brag about flying on a competitor’s airline on social media. That’s not AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes’ way of thinking. The CEO said that his own aircraft was fully booked, therefore he was forced to board a Singapore Airlines flight.
His Instagram post stated that he couldn’t fly by AirAsia, so he had to take a Singapore Airlines flight. Further, he posted photos of himself getting on a Singapore Airlines aircraft and the view from what looked to be an economy-class seat.
The cost of a round-trip economy ticket on AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur, the company’s headquarters, to Singapore is approximately US$70. Usually, the same flight on Singapore Airlines costs between $60 and $130 more.
Earlier, Tony Fernandes came under fire in October for showing up to a virtual conference without a shirt on while receiving a massage. He had complimented Indonesia and AirAsia’s work culture in a since-deleted LinkedIn post when he was able to receive a massage while attending a management meeting. Many others, meanwhile, blasted the behaviour as being unprofessional in the comments area.

Netizens React To The CEO’s Post
The CEO received various reactions from Netizens for taking another airline’s flight. A user commented that the CEO of a private airline respecting customer reservations and choosing to fly on a different airline completely rather than using a “corporate” tactic to move certain customers about is very nice.
Another user stated that AirAsia is successful for this reason. Not even the CEO has room. must fly at a higher fare in order to compete.
A user stated that it was a good choice and that he won’t miss his flight. Another person applauded his support and leadership.
A user criticised him and stated that he had to take a Singapore Airlines flight because of the seat quality provided by AirAsia. One of the users asked him if he still had to purchase a ticket to fly with AirAsia.
A user requested the CEO to please teach the AirAsia ground staff that just because a carriage is designated as “low-cost,” it doesn’t mean that they have to be impolite to passengers who have paid less for their tickets.
A person commented that when even your boss is unable to get a seat, you know your company is doing well!
Others were simply surprised at the fact that even after being a CEO, he couldn’t secure a seat on his own airline. While others were amazed that he decided to take another airline’s flight.
