The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, had given Mathura the ‘pilgrimage’ status’ in 2021. The Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi, considered to be the holy place where Lord Krishna was born, comprises temples like Keshavdeva Temple and Garbha Griha Temple. The Krishna Janmaboomi is one of the important teerthsthans of the Hindus. On June 1, 2022, the district excise office thus shut down alcohol and bhang shops located in proximity to the Janmabhoomi.

Sale Of Meat, Liquor And Bhang Banned Near Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi
CM Adityanath had issued a ban on the sale of liquor near important teerth sites and Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi. Following the CM’s order, the district excise office came to the decision of shutting the shops. The authority had also shut down meat shops near the pilgrimage site. Thus, the sale of meat, liquor or bhang will remain prohibited near the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi.

The Ban Has Been Put On Shops Within 10 Km Radius
The ban has been imposed on shops located within 10 kilometres of the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi. Liquor licences to shops falling within this zone have also been cancelled. The authorities have also ordered the shutting down of bars in the area.
