According to an article recently published by The Times of India or TOI, Amdavadis managed to spend more than ₹175 crores on Fafda-Jalebi, the delicious savoury and sweet snack from Gujarat that is loved universally. This means around 8.4 lakh kilogrammes of Jalebi and Fafda were consumed in the city of Ahmedabad alone!

Last year, Fafda was priced at ₹720 per kg. However, this year, after the 10 per cent price increase, it was priced somewhere between ₹750 to ₹1,300 per kg. Jalebi, correspondingly, was priced at ₹900 per kg. But this year, Jalebi cost around ₹1,000 per kg. Despite this rise in price, according to a Farsan Wala cited in the TOI article, the overall sales increased by 10 per cent.

As per the TOI article, there was approximately a 10 per cent increase in its price but data shows that sales of the snack were as robust as ever, if not stronger. Lakhs of people thronged to their nearby Farsan shops to get their fill of this yummy treat. Many people waited upwards of two hours in line at Farsan shops for this particular sweet and savoury treat.

That people in Ahmedabad have a strong love for the snack is well-known, but this latest piece of information serves as additional proof of it. What is more, their dedication to the treat seemed completely undeterred by the fact that there was an increase in the price of this Gujju favourite. Jethalal would be so proud!

The snack holds a special significance during Dussehra or Ravan Dahan. Since the Dahan of the Ravan is supposed to signify the triumph of good over evil, the snack is consumed as a symbol of balance. The sweet and savoury combination of Jalebi and Fafda is consumed so that a similar balance pervades the lives of those who eat them.

So, the snack is more than just a delicious treat. It is a prayer for a happy, balanced and fulfilled life and we certainly hope that all who ate it this year will have their prayers answered.
