‘Arrogant After Tasting Success’, Post About Bengaluru’s Shivaji Military Hotel Owner Sparks Debate

I’d be lying if I said I spent less time on Reddit than on other apps. The American discussion website has been the go-to place for Netizens to share their opinions on current news, personal experiences and more, unabashedly and anonymously. Recently, a Redditor shared his experience at Bengaluru’s iconic Shivaji Military Hotel. The Redditor allegedly witnessed the “arrogance” of the owner who muttered cuss words in Kannada at customers blocking the entrance of his restaurant. This post sparked a discussion among Bengaluru foodies who shared their experiences with other restaurant owners in the city.

In a Reddit post, @Remote-Patience-7521 stated that on December 13 the Redditor exited Shivaji Miltary Hotel in Jayanagar, Bengaluru, after an early lunch. At that time, people had already gathered at the entrance and were waiting for their seats. The Redditor noticed the owner walking out of the hotel, muttering cuss words in Kannada at customers for blocking his way. @Remote-Patience-7521 recognised the owner from YouTube videos.

Shocked to see the behaviour of the owner, the Netizen called him “arrogant” and lacking empathy for waiting customers. @Remote-Patience-7521 reasoned that the very same customers who were waiting (blocking the entrance) were the ones that are responsible for the growth and success of the hotel. So, the Redditor ends this story with a question, “Is it normal for eatery owners to exhibit arrogance after tasting success?”

This post in no time sparked a discussion among Redditors. @K2bond comments that this is the situation in many hyped up places in Bengaluru. The Redditor gives the example of an anomaly,  Shri Krishna Bhavan’s owner for being very humble. But goes on to say that owners of ,Shivaji military hotel and Vidyarthi Bhavan show “ganchali” or arrogance.

@HailCreepySmile gives a detailed observation of Bengaluru darshini owners. The Netizen hails owners of Veena Stores, Hegde Fast Food, MTR, Iyer Idly, Davangere Bene Dosa (Indiranagar) and CTR for their humility. However, goes on to call the owner of Brahmin’s Idly in Basavanagudi a “top quality rude person”.

@Psychan996 recalls an experience of visiting Maverick & Farmers with a friend. Since it was a weekend, the parking lot at Maverick’s was packed. However, the owner patiently stood there and directed cars while being friendly with the customers. This impressed the Netizen.
@justsomeguy0202 comments that he has seen the polite behavior of Mr.Vadudev Adiga, the owner of Paakashala chain of restaurants. The Redditor recalls observing the owner greeting customers, tasting dishes and even serving customers, himself. “Not a shred of arrogance despite being a multi-millionaire”, says the Netizen. Similarly, @GutsyGoofy comments that he went to school with Arun Adiga, the owner of Vidyarthi Bhavan, who he says treats customers and employees with the greatest respect and utmost humility.

Others Said The Owner Was Probably Having A Bad Day

Amid this discussion, there were a bunch of Redditors who asked the @Remote-Patience-7521 to understand that probably the owner of Shivaji Military Hotel was just having a bad day. After all, he is also a human being, they reasoned. Another Redditor supported the owner’s irritation as customers may have a tendency to block the entrance of an eatery due to impatience.
