Summers are always harsh, but each year the days are getting hotter. While parts of India are seeing rains or cooler weather, not every place is as lucky. Right now, a severe heatwave has gripped southern Europe, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C. Many people are now opting to travel elsewhere, skipping usually popular destinations like Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France.

According to The Indian Express, several heat warnings have been issued across these countries. Emergency medical services have been put on standby, and authorities are urging people to stay indoors as much as possible. Major cities are especially affected. Places like Rome (Italy), Madrid (Spain), and Bologna (Italy) are experiencing some of their hottest days ever during the ongoing heatwave in Europe.

  • Spain– This is one of the worst-hit regions, with Seville recording mid-40°C temperatures.
  • France– Almost the entire country is under a severe heatwave alert, which is expected to last at least a week.
  • Portugal– Officials have issued a weather warning and advised citizens to stay indoors between 11 am to 5 pm when temperatures are expected to peak.
  • Italy– Over 20 cities were placed under a red alert for extreme heat on June 29. Regions like Tuscany are reporting more hospital cases due to heatstroke and dehydration.
  • Croatia– The Adriatic Coast is also expected to remain very hot through the week, with temperatures nearing 40°C.

According to UN Chief António Guterres, a ‘heat dome’ has currently engulfed many parts of Europe. He has said this level of extreme heat is becoming the ‘new normal’. Moreover, the heatwave is likely to continue throughout the week.
