While everyone is bearing the brunt of the lockdown in some way or the other, the most adversely affected are the migrant workers and daily wage labourers. With no source of daily income, many of them have been deprived of the minimal necessary food. Ever since the start of the pandemic, many organisations and NGOs have come forward to provide help to these workers. A part of a school in West Bengal has also been converted into a community kitchen to provide meals to around 250 villagers. Most of these villagers are tribals, daily wagers and migrant workers.

Community Kitchen In West Bengal Provides Meals To Tribals And Daily Wagers
At noon, villagers queue up outside the Karmu Dharmu Mission Primary School at Huchukpara, West Bengal to collect their meals primarily comprising rice, dal, mixed veg and eggs. A small hut, which is a part of the school, has been converted into a community kitchen. The kitchen runs on crowdfunding. Reportedly, there are three such kitchens operating in the area. Most of the villages in the area are involved in stone quarrying and mining activities. They used to travel to places in the proximity for work, prior to the COVID-19 lockdown. The villagers put on their masks before heading to the community kitchen for collecting the meals. The kitchen is feeding around 250 villagers. They usually carry utensils like plates, bowls, lunch boxes and other containers for receiving the food. Meanwhile, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has launched a bus that will travel to the markets to vaccinate priority groups, including vegetable and fish sellers, grocery retailers, etc. KMC has started the ‘vaccination on wheels’ campaign by cooperating with the Health and Transport departments of the West Bengal government.
