Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway Gets Safety Upgrade; AI Cameras To Be Installed Every 2 Kilometres

The Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway is receiving a much-needed safety upgrade with the installation of AI-powered cameras every 2 kilometres along its 118-kilometre stretch. This significant shift from the original plan, which called for cameras every 10 kilometres, comes in response to a disturbing number of accidents. In just nine months since opening, the expressway tragically claimed the lives of 158 people.

Spearheading this initiative is the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Traffic and Road Safety, Alok Kumar. In a statement to TOI, he highlighted the crucial role AI cameras will play in enforcing traffic regulations and ultimately reducing accidents. ADGP Kumar believes these new AI cameras are a game-changer for traffic safety. By automatically catching speeding and people who don’t stay in their lanes, they’ll make the roads safer for all.

The increased camera density offers several advantages. Firstly, it provides near-continuous monitoring of the expressway, deterring motorists from reckless behaviour in the knowledge they’re highly likely to be caught. Secondly, the AI capabilities allow for the automatic detection of offences, streamlining the process of issuing fines and penalties. Kumar further stated to TOI that this swift action serves as a stronger deterrent and reinforces responsible driving habits.

Two-Pronged Approach

However, the solution goes beyond just penalizing offenders. The initiative also includes installing speed limit reminder boards every 2 kilometres alongside the cameras. This two-pronged approach – enforcement and awareness – aims to create a safer driving environment for all road users.

The Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway is a vital artery connecting two major cities. Upgrading its safety infrastructure is not just about reducing accidents; it’s about fostering economic growth and development in the region. A safer expressway will not only give motorists peace of mind but also encourage the smooth flow of goods and services, benefiting businesses and residents alike.

While the initial investment in AI cameras and signage is significant, the long-term benefits outweigh the costs. Fewer accidents translate to less loss of life, reduced medical expenses, and minimized damage to vehicles and property. Additionally, a safer expressway could potentially attract more investment and economic activity to the surrounding areas.

With this initiative, authorities take a positive step towards creating a safer and more efficient road network for the nation.
