Did You Know Bengaluru Has A ‘Tinder For Footpaths’? You Can Swipe, Report & Fix Footpaths!

Footpaths, as the name suggests, are meant for pedestrians. But in Bengaluru, and much of India, they are often encroached upon, broken, or simply unusable. Thankfully, the younger generation is stepping in to change that. A teenager from Bengaluru has developed an app called RASTHE that allows citizens to report damaged or inaccessible footpaths directly to the city’s municipal corporation, the BBMP. Here’s everything you need to know about this initiative.

Bengaluru Teen Makes ‘Tinder For Footpaths’ App

Meet Surya Uthkarsha, a 14-year-old from Bengaluru, who developed a mobile application called “RASTHE.” Addressing the footpath crisis in the city, the teen created the app that allows users to report damaged or unusable footpaths directly to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The civic-tech app lets residents report broken or unusable footpaths by simply swiping, rating, and uploading photos directly to civic authorities. According to NDTV, the app was built in just 30 minutes using the 10x Apps platform and has since been nicknamed the “Tinder for footpaths” for its swipe-based interface.

What makes the app even more interesting is that users can nominate both good and bad footpaths, while others can vote on them. According to Surya, this creates a public ranking system that helps identify the city’s best and worst pedestrian routes.

All You Need To Know About RASTHE

Calling it the “Tinder for Footpaths,” Surya explained in a post on X that the app is a crowdsourced platform where citizens can “report broken or missing footpaths directly to BBMP.” The app lets users “swipe” through footpaths like Tinder, upvote the worst stretches that need urgent attention, and essentially turn every citizen into a real-time sensor for the city’s infrastructure problems.

The app aims to crowdsource information about pedestrian infrastructure issues across Bengaluru and bring urgent attention to neglected areas. According to Surya, users can upload photos of damaged pavements, missing walkways, or poorly maintained footpaths through the platform. These reports are then mapped ward-wise, helping the BBMP identify problem zones more efficiently and respond to civic complaints in a more organised manner.
