Airports are always looking for ways to make travel easier, including international journeys. Soon, things might get even more advanced. Imagine going to the airport and boarding flights without showing your passport or boarding pass. That’s exactly what Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BIAL) is working on, in partnership with IndiGo, Digi Yatra, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Bengaluru Airport Trials Paperless Biometric Travel
In the trial at Bengaluru airport, passengers got to see a future where travel is almost effortless. According to Hindustan Times, grom booking tickets to moving through the airport, everything ran on biometric technology. Instead of showing your passport or boarding pass at every step, the system recognised travellers through a secure digital ID linked to their face.
The cool part? You’re in charge of your own information. This system uses something called Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), which keeps your data safe and lets airports and airlines verify it instantly. It even talks to airline apps, so your boarding pass and travel details pop up automatically, no more digging through your bag or phone at every checkpoint. Travel just got way simpler!

Upgrade Of Digi Yatra Program
This new system is an upgrade of the Digi Yatra program, which is already used for domestic flights in India. Now, it’s being tested for international travel. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is working to create a global standard for “contactless travel,” so in the future, passengers could use the same digital ID at airports all over the world.
As per Hindustan Times, airports like Bengaluru, which are seeing more and more international travellers, can gain a lot from this system. It can cut long queues, reduce waiting times, and make travel much less stressful. Instead of dealing with paperwork, passengers can focus on enjoying their journey.
