Making pasta is more than just cooking; it’s a form of therapy. A recent Instagram reel by a popular food blogger reveals how to craft five distinct pasta shapes using semolina dough, all without a pasta machine.

The blogger starts by preparing a simple semolina dough. With just 500g of semolina flour and 235ml of lukewarm water, he mixes and kneads the ingredients into a smooth dough. From this dough, he creates trofie, busiate, cavatelli, orecchiette, and capunti.

First, he forms trofie, a twisty pasta shape from Liguria. Trofie’s spiral design is great for clinging to pesto or chunky sauces. Next, he shapes busiate, a corkscrew pasta from Sicily, which pairs beautifully with rich, meaty sauces. Cavatelli follows, with its small, shell-like form ideal for creamy sauces. The blogger then makes orecchiette, or “little ears,” from Puglia, a shape excellent for vegetable or tomato-based sauces. Finally, he creates capunti, a pasta with a hollow, shell-like shape, perfect for any sauce you prefer.

However, not everyone is thrilled with the reel. Some viewers have expressed hygiene concerns. “Wow, no gloves?” one comment reads. “Eww, gross! I will never visit this dirty country,” another adds. There are reactions questioning the cleanliness of the process, with comments like, “He literally rubbed his palm and hairy hands and fingers on the pasta?”.

In response to these hygiene-focused comments, it’s worth noting that if the food is being prepared solely for personal consumption and not for public sale, the use of gloves isn’t strictly necessary. The blogger’s defenders argue, “If it’s his own food and he’s not preparing it for the public, what is the problem?”

The playful banter about pasta shapes continues. Some netizens joke that Italians invent new pasta shapes whenever they’re bored. While it might seem like an overload of pasta varieties, each shape genuinely offers a distinct taste and texture. Even if you mix them all into the same sauce, they still bring different flavours to the dish.
