You must be wondering why you should visit a court unless you have some legal proceedings to solve? But the Bombay High Court is an architectural marvel that deserves at least one visit. And guess what? Now, anyone can take a tour of this grand, castle-like structure courtesy, thanks to the guided tours, organised by Maharashtra’s Directorate of Tourism.
Bombay High Court Is A World Heritage Site
The four-storied stone building has a very interesting history. It was constructed over seven years from 1871 to 1878. Designed by Lieutenant-Colonel John Augustus Fuller of the Royal Engineers, the sone building overlooking the lush green Oval Maidan spans 80,000sq ft. The structure with pointed arches, high ceilings, and ornate interiors, became a World Heritage Site in 2018.

The Court Houses A Museum With Courtroom, Portraits Of Advocates & More
In 2015, a museum with a courtroom, portraits of advocates, and legal rolls were inaugurated within the building. Degrees and certificates belonging to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Vallabhbhai Patel are also on display. A minuscule model of the Bombay High Court offering a quick peek into the vast building is also placed at one corner. The court frequented by many great personalities such as Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and M.A. Jinnah is indeed a treat to the eyes.
You Can Go For An Hour-Long Guided Tour
Maharashtra’s Directorate of Tourism will arrange for three walks a day on non-working Saturdays and Sundays. The guided heritage walks will begin at Gate No. 4 and last for an hour. You will get a sneak peek of the Judge’s Library, Central Court Hall No. 46 and get to see the statue of Justice M.C Chagla, the first Indian Chief Justice of Bombay High Court up close.
