Nauheed Cyrusi On Parsi Thread Ceremony
While walking down the Parsi Colony in Mumbai, we went to a cloth factory, where the clothes for the Parsi thread ceremony are stitched. As we entered the place, Nauheed told us all about the Parsi thread ceremony, which is very similar to the Hindu thread ceremony. She said the Parsi community has its own sacred thread ceremony, known as Navjot, which marks an important religious milestone in a young person’s life.
Similar to initiation ceremonies found in other Indian communities, Navjot is when a Parsi child formally begins wearing two important religious garments, the Sadra and Kasti. She explained that the ceremony is performed for both boys and girls, generally when they are around seven to nine years old and before puberty. She also revealed that this place in the Parsi Colony is one of the rare places in the world that make the thread, and it was one of them.
Nauheed Cyrusi Reveals Typical Parsi Brunch
As the interview continued, we visited Nauheed Cyrusi’s mother’s home, where not only did we enjoy a home tour but also sat at the dining table for authentic Parsi food. During the conversation, Nauheed’s mother told us about the dishes that every Parsi eats at home. She mentioned Dal Chawal and Patiya are staples in every Parsi household.
Explaining what Patiya is, the mother-daughter told us that it is made with tomatoes and fish. They eat Prawn Patiya with a bland dal made with Toor dal and ghee, without any tadka. They said the combination tastes delicious.
