According to an article that was recently published by mid-day, Sameer Joshi, the theatre’s owner, points to several factors that led to its downfall. Despite upgrading to 4K projection and installing state-of-the-art sound systems, the 650-seat cinema struggled to attract even 100 viewers per show.
The rise of streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon, combined with changing audience preferences, dealt a severe blow to the traditional cinema experience. Additionally, Joshi highlights the lack of government support.
He noted that despite appeals from the Single Screen Owners Association, no meaningful assistance was provided to help these cultural institutions adapt to changing times. For the local community, Chandan Talkies represented more than just a movie theatre.
Bid Adieu To The Last Single-Screen Cinema In Mumbai
Auto-rickshaw driver Shadab Shaikh, cited in the mid-day article, remembers it as the last bastion of affordable entertainment in the area. The ticket prices ranged from ₹150 to ₹180. The theatre was known for its vibrant atmosphere, where audiences freely expressed their excitement through whistles, claps, and enthusiastic reactions.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra, also mentioned in the article, frequented the cinema since its early days. He emphasised the importance of preserving such cultural landmarks. He argues that while business considerations are understandable, governmental intervention could have helped protect these pieces of Mumbai’s heritage.
The demolition of Chandan Talkies represents not just the loss of a building, but the disappearance of a communal space that brought together people from all walks of life to share in the magic of cinema.
