Chennai Airport Terminal Update: IndiGo Flights Relocate To This Terminal Now. Passengers, Take Note!

From 1 June 2025, passengers flying on IndiGo’s ATR flights from Chennai Airport will need to head to a new terminal. In a major move to streamline domestic operations and reduce congestion, the airport will shift all IndiGo-operated ATR flights to Terminal 4 (T4). This update will affect those travelling to regional destinations across South India, including cities like Madurai, Trichy, Vijayawada, and Rajahmundry.

Chennai Airport Terminal Shift Begins June 1

According to Times Now, Chennai Airport will implement the change from the beginning of June to enhance efficiency in terminal usage. At present, Terminal 1 (T1) handles both jet and turboprop aircraft. With rising passenger traffic, the airport has now reallocated its terminal responsibilities. Terminal 4, which previously served international departures and arrivals, has now been repurposed for domestic use, especially to accommodate regional ATR operations.

The decision to move these regional flights was made to ensure a more seamless experience for flyers, as it allows the airport to separate larger aircraft operations from smaller, short-haul services. IndiGo operates a fleet of ATR 72-600 aircraft for regional routes, which are well-suited for airports with shorter runways and lower traffic volumes.

Terminal 4 Offers Improved Passenger Facilities

As reported by The Hindu, Terminal 4 has undergone upgrades to support domestic flight services. The terminal features updated check-in counters, improved baggage systems, and enhanced passenger seating areas. These changes are part of Chennai Airport’s ongoing modernisation efforts to cope with the growing demand for regional connectivity.

Passengers can expect a more relaxed environment at T4 compared to the bustling Terminal 1. The separate terminal allocation also makes room for better handling of both regional and metro-bound flights. With the number of domestic flyers steadily rising, the terminal reshuffle aims to maintain smooth operations and reduce delays.

Key Information For Travellers

Travellers flying on IndiGo’s regional services from Chennai are strongly advised to double-check their terminal details before departure. Arriving early at the airport is also recommended to avoid confusion, especially during the transition period. Chennai Airport authorities have confirmed that the move will only impact IndiGo’s ATR services, while other domestic flights will continue to operate from their usual terminals.
