Chennai will soon be home to its second airport constructed at Parandur. With three terminals, the proposed greenfield Parandur airport will be built on a massive 4,970 acres of land. Now, plans are ongoing for a significant metro project to connect the upcoming airport and the Poonamallee Bypass. There will likely be a definite plan for this crucial Chennai metro project soon, that too in less than a year.
Here’s All You Need To Know About The Upcoming Metro Link To Parandur Airport

The upcoming metro link between Poonamallee Bypass and the airport at Parandur is a much-awaited one. Concerned officials and departments have also started working on preparing plans for this project. According to several reports, the finalised plans are expected to be ready in a duration of less than a year. According to a report by the Times of India, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) began to receive bids. Till now, there have been bids from 5 firms showing interest in working on making a Detailed Project Report. The firms who bid for the Detailed Project Report are:
- Aarvee Associates Architects Engineers and Consultants Pvt Ltd
- AECOM India Pvt Ltd
- Balaji Railroad Systems Pvt Ltd
- Systra MVA Consulting (India) Pvt Ltd
- Urban Mass Transit Company Ltd
As of now, the proposal is to construct a 43.63 km line connecting the airport at Parandur and the Poonamallee Bypass. With 19 metro stations, this metro line in Chennai will also be an extended development of the Lighthouse-Poonamallee Bypass corridor-4 of 26.1 km. The Tamilnadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited released a map indicating the probable chances for Parandur to get to one metro station on the upcoming airport’s city side and another outside the passenger terminal.
Back in February, a tender for the Detailed Project Report was floated and it had a deadline of 6 months. Before finalising everything, the bids will be evaluated, a CMRL official shared. Among all the options, the lowest bidder will be chosen during the process of the financial bid.
