The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China has recently witnessed avalanches owing to heavy snowfall in the region. The avalanches ended up trapping a large number of tourists who went there on vacation. As of now, the rescue operations for the tourists trapped in the region are ongoing. Many have been successfully rescued while others are yet to be saved. Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this avalanche.
China Avalanche: More Than 1,000 Tourists Trapped
According to an article which was recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, rescuers have managed to save tourists from a remote skiing area which is located in the northwestern region of China.
There were as many as 1,000 people trapped in the avalanche for around a week before the rescuers saved them. They were rescued on Tuesday from the Altay Prefecture via a military helicopter.
The avalanches have resulted in the blocks of many roads. This, in turn, stranded tourists and residents alike in the Altay prefecture of the Xinjiang region. The Altay prefecture shares a border with Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia.

Rescue Operations Are Still Going On In This Region
The rescue operations are still underway in the area and those people who have been injured are being lifted off in military helicopters. Even food and supplies are being flown into the region to help those in need.
The Altay prefecture is quickly becoming one of the up-and-coming skiing destinations in the country. The avalanche ended up impacting around 350 kilometres of road, as per the HT article.
As of Saturday, around 31 avalanches were reported in the region.
