Jammu and Kashmir has a mountainous topography. Therefore, there is a risk of avalanches in several areas like Baramulla, Anantnag, Kulgam, etc. Recently, the disaster management authority has warned locals about ‘low danger level’ avalanches over Kishtwar, Bandipora, Doda and Kupwara districts — specifically above 3200 metres to 3500 metres above sea level. The locals living in avalanche-prone areas are asked to avoid venturing and take preventive measures.

On Monday, an avalanche hit the Zojila Pass and buried two buses underneath it. After the incident, vehicular movement has been on halt for two days on the Srinagar-Leh Highway. According to the administration, the decision was taken due to fear of avalanches. Four truck drivers were injured during the incident.

In fact, for the past three months, the authorities have given multiple avalanche warnings. In February, Gulmarg experienced an avalanche and two foreigners were killed in it. Besides this, there were two local guides and 19 tourists that were rescued. According to the Baramulla police, 21 tourists and 2 guides had gone to Affarwat Gulmarg for skiing. However, they were trapped, and a rescue operation was planned.

But what causes an avalanche? Well, an avalanche is basically the rapid movement of mass material down the slope. It occurs when the material breaks loose from the surrounding and comes down the slope rapidly. In the case of snow avalanches, it is a large amount of snow coming down the slope! In order to prevent this sliding of material, there needs to be proper fencing and artificial walls.
