China’s ‘Puppy Mountain’ has taken the Internet by storm. It is situated in Yichang, Hubei province, and the unusual mountain formation has a striking resemblance to a sleeping dog. Social media users all over China are referring to it as the most adorable natural phenomenon.

The mountain lies along the Yangtze River, with its ‘snout’ seeming to dip into the water as if the puppy is drinking water. This cute find was made by Shanghai designer Guo Qingshan, who inadvertently took the perfect photo while trekking to his hometown.
His RedNote Valentine’s Day post quickly went viral, attracting thousands of visitors to see the natural phenomenon.

Guo’s post had more than 120,000 likes in a day. The hashtag #xiaogoushan, or ‘Puppy Mountain’ in Chinese, got millions of views on Weibo. Dog owners all over China followed the trend, posting side-by-side photos of their dogs to compare their resemblance to the mountain.
Most users welcomed the news, with one posting, ‘Puppy Mountain, here I am! Just pet the puppy’s head and all will be well.’ Another said, ‘We all need the eyes to see the beauty in this world.’
Visitors flocked to Yichang, some even bringing their dogs for adorable photoshoots. Yang Yang, a traveller from a nearby city, brought her two-year-old grey poodle along. ‘I always travel with my dog, so this place felt perfect for us,’ she said.
A Secret Hidden Gem In Yichang
The mountain, located in Zigui County, had always existed, but most people had never seen that it resembled a dog. The viral image prompted villagers to look through old photos, with some realising they had seen the area years earlier without drawing the connection.
Yichang resident Shi Tong posted a 2021 image and stated, ‘I knew I’d been there before; I just never paid attention to the shape until I saw the viral post!’
With its newfound popularity, ‘Puppy Mountain’ has become a haven for nature lovers and dog lovers alike. Whether you spot a dog taking a drink, looking at fish, or standing guard at the river, you can be sure of one thing—this mountain has stolen the hearts of many.
