The spirit of devotion, art and tradition will once again come alive in Mulund with the 66th edition of the unique Sabudana Ganesh Rangoli, created under the artistic leadership of renowned artist Mohankumar Dodecha. At 83, Mohankumar continues the remarkable tradition of creating Lord Ganesha’s portrait using sago, or sabudana. This year, the artwork measures approximately 7 × 8 feet and has been created using nearly 40 kg of sago in around 350 different shades of colour. Want to know more about this year’s theme? This Year’s Sabudana Ganpati: Is A Son’s Devotion To His Father
The theme of this year’s rangoli is “Pitru Bhakti: A Son’s Devotion To His Father.” The artwork depicts Lord Ganesha performing Abhishekam and offering prayers to a Shivling, representing the eternal bond between a son and his father, Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva. The Shivling represents Mahadev, while Ganesha is shown with humility and devotion as he offers sacred water to his father’s divine form. Nandi and Mushak are also part of the composition, adding another layer of meaning to the artwork. Nandi represents Lord Shiva’s eternal devotee, while Mushak is Lord Ganesha’s divine companion.
The artwork carries a message that goes beyond worship. It reflects respect, humility, gratitude and the enduring bond between a father and son. The central thought behind the theme is, “When the son himself is Lord Ganesha, the father is Mahadev, and devotion becomes the most beautiful expression of love.” Through Ganesha’s worship of the Shivling, the artwork conveys the idea that no matter how powerful, successful or independent a son becomes, the respect and values he holds for his father remain eternal.

The Sabudana Ganesh Rangoli is created by carefully colouring individual grains of sago and placing them meticulously to form the intricate portrait of Lord Ganesha. Every tiny grain contributes to the larger artwork, making the process one that requires immense patience, precision and dedication. What began as an artistic tradition has now completed 66 years, bringing together faith, creativity and cultural heritage. Mohankumar is joined by fellow artists Bhupesh Joshi, Dayaram Hindisota, Archana Palan, Bhavna Bhanushali, Bharat Gori, Deepak Ruparel, Dr Chetan and Navin Chauhan. Their collective efforts bring the devotional artwork to life.
Dodecha’s distinctive art has also received recognition at national and international levels, with his work featured on platforms including the Guinness World Records, Limca Book of Records and Asia Book of Records.
