For the Chinese community, the new year doesn’t start on the 1st of January but between 20th January and 20th February and is called the Chinese New Year. According to legends, a monster named Nian would attack villagers at the beginning of every New Year. However, he was afraid of red colour and bright lanterns. So, this became a mark for their new year and people started wearing red clothes and continued this tradition.
